A referral is a written request for an evaluation that is given to the school district when a child is suspected of having a disability and might need special education services. A referral is made after a student has gone through the Intervention and Referral Service Program where weaknesses are identified and accommodations were implemented. A letter to request a referral may be written to the school principal or to the supervisor of special services.
Parents, school personnel and agencies concerned with the academic and emotional functioning of students can refer a student to the Child Study Team.
Within 20 calendar days of receiving a referral, the school district must hold a meeting to decide whether an evaluation will be conducted. If an evaluation will not be conducted, recommendations may be made with respect to interventions or services to the student in general education.
If, after the evaluations are completed, a student is determined to have a disability and that disability makes it necessary for the student to receive special education and/or related services in order to be successful in school, an Individual Educational Program (IEP) will be developed for the student. This program will be reviewed annually. In order to meet the educational needs of these students, the River Edge School District offers a range of specialized programs including self-contained special education classes, resource center classes, related services including; speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and counseling services are provided when a students' disability impedes his/her academic performance. All special education classes/programs are taught by certified teachers. Assistance is provided by specialists when needed.
